Given the surge in COVID-19 cases in Mexico and the arrival of the new KP.2 and KP.3 variants, a new wave of the SARS-CoV virus is already expected that could last more than six months, as indicated by infectious disease doctor Alejandro Macías, who in a video asked the population “not to panic” and to comply with all health measures to prevent contagion.

“Until July 2024, new variants of the COVID-19 virus have already entered the United States, in the first half of the year, and we already know that when new variants arrive, there will be more cases,” said the specialist through his X account.

According to the professor at the University of Guanajuato, this surge is not a surprise, since it has been shown that most of the variants have traditionally decreased from north to south, so in Mexico and Latin America these changes will soon be reflected.

What will happen with the KP.2 and KP.3 subvariants of COVID-19?

According to Alejandro Macías, in the coming weeks, the KP.2, KP.3 and LB.1 subvariants are expected to replace the JN.1 Pirola variant, which is responsible for the increase in positivity and COVID-19 cases since last January.

This will be accompanied by new infections, since according to health authorities in the United States, these subvariants have replaced the current variants.

“Let’s not panic. Masks indoors, new vaccines, trying to exercise and being in the best physical condition possible,” the expert recommended.
