A confrontation between security forces and members of organized crime left eight dead, five hitmen, two soldiers and a state police officer, in the municipality of Abasolo, Tamaulipas, early Saturday morning, security authorities reported.
Preliminary reports indicate that the violence broke out after the alleged arrest of Diana Laura “N”, identified as the wife of Jorge Luis Chávez Hernández, alias “El Flaco”, considered the head of hitmen for the Zetas Vieja Escuela in Abasolo.
In response, alleged members of the criminal group arrived in the center of the town in vehicles with homemade armor, known as “Monstruos”, and attacked the hotel where elements of the Tamaulipas State Guard were staying, which led to several hours of gunfire.
Seeing themselves overwhelmed, state agents requested support from the Army and the National Guard and together they neutralized five alleged hitmen who were traveling in various vehicles and managed to arrest armed civilians, authorities said.
The agents seized weapons, bulletproof vests and ammunition from the alleged members of the Zetas Vieja Escuela.
