With the recent news about the light rail reaching Campeche, taxi drivers are worried about their livelihoods and the potential impact of the new transportation system. The announcement also mentioned additional routes circulating within the capital city.
However, it was also revealed that one of these new routes will specifically serve the airport, which has left taxi drivers concerned. In previous months, airport taxi drivers faced a crisis due to the lack of flights and passengers to transport.
Now, with the light rail system on the horizon, private transportation providers fear that this crisis could worsen. Currently, there are only two to three daily flights, resulting in minimal demand for taxi services.
It’s worth noting that each taxi ride costs approximately 300 pesos, and drivers receive 20% of the fare. Despite not being opposed to the new buses or the light rail, taxi drivers remain uncertain about their future.
The proximity of the light rail station to the airport could potentially reduce demand for taxi services, especially as passengers may opt for the novelty of the new system. The situation remains uncertain for these taxi drivers.
