Gender modifications can also be requested by parents of minors under 18 years old

Members of the LGBTTTI community in Campeche can now make changes to their birth certificates through the Civil Registry without the need for a civil trial or seeking protection from a federal court. They can simply apply and meet the necessary requirements.

This achievement comes after several years of work on a gender identity law, driven by the Human Rights Commission of the State of Campeche (Codhecam).

Until 2022, there were at least nine cases of LGBTTTI individuals who had requested a court order from a federal judge to change their gender on their birth certificates. For other documents, such as professional titles, voter IDs, and passports, citizens were unable to change their gender.

With this modification to the Civil Code of the State of Campeche, not only can those who wish to change their gender request it, but parents can also exercise their right to request it on behalf of minors under 18 years old.

These efforts began two years ago when various activist groups advocating for the rights of community members approached the State Congress to find the proper channel for their demands. It was Deputy César González David who embraced the proposal, working on it through various dialogues and ultimately reaching relevant agreements with the special legislative committees.
