Blockades in Chiapas are extended

Roadblocks by armed groups have spread throughout the Sierra Fronteriza region of Chiapas, leading residents to say that they are experiencing “one of the worst crises in the state.”

In an interview with El Heraldo de Chiapas, one of the inhabitants of the sierra said that people from communities in the eight municipalities that make up the region are forced by organized crime to carry out blockades, which have extended to the borders with the Frailesca region.

“We do not belong to any of these groups that are around here, we are simply here, because we do not want irregular groups (organized crime) to continue entering our homes,” said the resident.

Since July 19, 26 roadblocks have been set up in the Sierra on federal highways 190 and 201 in the municipalities of Frontera Comalapa, Siltepec, Motozintla, Mazapa de Madero, Amatenango de la Frontera and Chicomuselo. However, the farmer said that on Thursday they closed the El Chalán pass, a boat that transports vehicles from one side to the other in the La Angostura dam, which connects La Concordia and Chicomuselo. “They were blocking at the height of the military barracks, they went down to Rizo de Oro and asked the El Chalán workers to leave, since a confrontation had already occurred there, the people listened and went home,” he added.
