Teachers from the Altos region’s Central Struggle Council (CCL), Section 7 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), announced a rally on the San Cristóbal–Tuxtla Gutiérrez toll road to raise awareness about the national teachers’ strike and the ongoing indefinite sit-in at Mexico City’s Zócalo square. As of Sunday night, it has not been confirmed whether there will be a roadblock, although the rally is scheduled for Monday, May 26.

The Altos Regional Coordinator of the CCL called on the teachers’ union to gather starting at 9 a.m. at kilometer 46 to raise awareness about the teachers’ movement. There is a possibility that this important highway connecting San Cristóbal with Tuxtla Gutiérrez may be temporarily closed. Social organizations and parents could join this mobilization.

The main demand of the Chiapas teachers’ union is the complete repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, in addition to other long-standing demands. More than 500 teachers are expected to participate in this action, during which new activities will be defined starting at 9:00 a.m. Despite the presence of police, army, and National Guard personnel in the area, protesters could block the highway.

Finally, there is concern among motorists and truckers traveling between the cultural and political capitals of Chiapas, as the road users will be the most affected. It is recommended to use alternate routes and take precautions. The federal highway will remain open.
