The lighting of the Morelia Cathedral will remain suspended until the protest camp set up in front of the Government Palace is removed, reported Yankel Benítez Silva, secretary of the Morelia City Council.

In an interview with the media, the municipal official explained that, as in the previous two weekends, the measure will remain in effect as long as the protest camp set up by some members of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) Poder de Base remains in place.

This is because many of the materials used at the site are flammable and could pose a risk if they come into contact with the fireworks used during the lighting.

“The risk here is the issue of the tarps; that can generate a fire risk (…)”
the secretary emphasized.

He also indicated that, based on an analysis conducted by Civil Protection, the Morelia Tourism Secretariat has been recommended not to carry out the activity while the protest camp remains in the area.
