For malpractice in public office, the Mérida City Council dismissed five officials and reprimanded eight more.

This Monday, at her weekly press conference, PAN Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada stated that the public servants were dismissed for acts of corruption, which were reported by the citizens themselves.

She declared that her administration will not tolerate acts of dishonesty:

“Employees who were not honest have been dismissed. We ask the people of Mérida to report them. We are not exempt from mistakes, but we will act firmly,” she stated.

She emphasized that these cases are related to the Urban Development area, where officials demanded bribes for the authorization of mostly irregular permits.

She emphasized that the Mérida Municipality has taken firm action against the corruption and disorder occurring in some areas of the city, following citizen concerns reported to the City Council.

The mayor indicated that the City Council is addressing the issue of corruption and therefore encouraged the residents of Mérida to report any situation that arises.
