Tense moments erupted this Sunday on Mérida’s Periférico (ring road) as a woman threatened to jump off a pedestrian bridge, prompting the mobilization of emergency services.
The incident was reported at kilometer 3 of the ring road, very close to El Roble, on pedestrian bridge number 1, where police and firefighters from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) arrived.

According to preliminary information, this afternoon the woman climbed onto the bridge structure and threatened to jump into the void, prompting pedestrians crossing the area to call 911.
Police, paramedics, and firefighters from the SSP arrived on the scene within moments to respond to the situation.
Initially, it was reported that the woman struggled with the firefighters, but they managed to control the victim.
After several minutes of work, rescuers brought the woman down and, at the time of writing, were assessing her and transferring her to a hospital for medical attention.
Why did she want to jump off a bridge on the Periférico (ring road)?
However, the reasons that led the woman to climb onto the structure are currently unknown.
Due to the mobilization, the lanes of the Periférico (ring road) in the area were closed to traffic, creating traffic chaos as motorists were traveling on the side of the road.
SSP activates emergency protocol on Mérida’s Periférico (ring road)
In a statement, the SSP reported that at kilometer 02+000 of the outer stream of Mérida’s Periférico (ring road) the intervention protocol was activated due to an emergency situation involving a citizen.
“Thanks to a call received at 911, security personnel, firefighters, and the SSP State Investigation Police were dispatched.”
“The coordinated and effective maneuvers made it possible to secure the person and safely remove her from the vehicle. She was subsequently transferred for specialized care.”
