Mexico City tops the list of disappearances in the country, warns Mexico Evalúa.

The organization México Evalúa presented its report, “Violence and Pacification at the Local Level,” this Thursday. Mexico City appears to have the highest number of missing and unaccounted-for persons in the country.

The report indicates that between January and July 2025—as of August 18—1,306 disappearances were recorded in the capital, placing it first in the nation for this crime. For the organization, these figures reflect a deterioration in the capabilities of prosecutors’ offices, as well as an intensification of the conflict between local criminal groups and new criminal organizations.

The analysis explains that, although the federal government typically measures violence based on the intentional homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants, this indicator is insufficient to fully understand the problem. It does not take into account factors such as institutional erosion, the evolution of criminal groups, or the underreporting of murders.

México Evalúa proposed a broader approach, integrating other crimes against life, femicides, negligent homicides, and disappearances. It found that from January to July 2025, intentional homicides fell 16.4% compared to the previous year. However, during the same period, crimes against life increased 2.6% and disappearances grew 12.9%. Compared to 2019, the increases reached 82% and 69.5%, respectively.

The document also warns that the states with the highest rates of lethal violence are Sinaloa (72.4%), Hidalgo (28.4%), Mexico City (26.2%), Nayarit (24.8%), and Baja California Sur (22.6%). Despite the military presence, Sinaloa continues to lead the increase in violence after a year of intense criminal confrontation.
