During the Wellness Brigades carried out by the DIF System in different communities, cases of drug use among minors have been detected, as well as anxiety and depression, reported the institution’s president, Eneyda Rocha Ruiz.
Although she acknowledged that it is not the DIF’s direct responsibility to treat addictions and mental disorders, Rocha Ruiz expressed concern about the increase in these cases, which has led to the creation of a specialized center within the Sinaloa Psychiatric Hospital, specifically designed for the care of children.
The president of the DIF system explained that the new center has a child psychiatrist responsible for diagnosing and treating children and adolescents with addictions, anxiety, depression, and other conditions.
This space, she said, allows for crisis control, the initiation of appropriate treatment, and, at the same time, establishes contact with families to ensure comprehensive follow-up.
“This is a mental health issue, not just a social assistance issue, which is why we cannot care for them in childcare centers or traditional shelters,” she stated.
Rocha Ruiz emphasized that, although exact figures are not available, the detected cases are more frequent than expected. Therefore, she emphasized prevention at the family level, urging mothers, fathers, and guardians to remain alert to warning signs in their children’s behavior.
“Many times, signs can be detected before the problem worsens,” she warned.
