Although the sea is currently in favorable conditions for swimmers, Mazatlán lifeguards remain on alert for the presence of Tropical Storm Lorena, which is located in the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of Colima and Jalisco.
Gustavo Bastidas, commander of the Municipal Police Aquatic Rescue Squad, commented that for now, only some beach areas are posted with yellow and red flags to warn swimmers of risk zones.
He said that, although Lorena does not currently pose a danger to the coast of Mazatlán, they are monitoring its path to be alert for any eventuality that may occur.
“Right now, the conditions are favorable; the waves have dropped slightly, and there are recommendations in some areas. The areas with recommendations regarding entry into the sea are changing, and the natural phenomenon in the coastal areas continues to be monitored.”
He explained that, although the holiday season is over, there are still bathers on the beaches, as well as young people who enjoy surfing when there is a threat of natural phenomena on the coast, since that is when waves of good size for this sport are present.
He indicated that the Aquatic Rescue Squad remains in coordination with surfers, supporting them to prevent inexperienced surfers from engaging in this activity or swimming in high-wave areas.
The commander encouraged swimmers at local beaches to seek out a lifeguard upon arrival and ask about the sea conditions, whether they are suitable for entry, and thus prevent any tragedy.
