Jesús Muñoz Gutiérrez was repatriated to Mexico after being deported by the United States to South Sudan along with seven other individuals convicted in that country of serious crimes such as murder and rape.

The Mexican national was arrested on May 12 and later found guilty of second-degree murder, which earned him a life sentence.

After arriving in the African country with a group of eight people on July 5, the South Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that this Saturday, September 6, two months later, Jesús Muñoz Gutiérrez was “successfully” repatriated.

In a statement, the Ministry detailed that the repatriation was carried out jointly with the Mexican government in full compliance with international law, bilateral agreements, and diplomatic protocols.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is pleased to announce the successful repatriation of Mr. J. Jesús Muñoz Gutiérrez, a citizen of the United Mexican States, to his country of origin today, September 6, 2025,” the document details.

This Saturday, a bilateral meeting was held between the Honorable Minister Ambassador Monday Semaya K. Kumba and H.E. Alejandro Ives Estivill Castro, Ambassador-Designate to South Sudan based in Addis Ababa. Estivill Castro presented a copy of his letter of appointment and discussed issues of mutual interest.

The repatriation of the Mexican national took place under the custody of Estivill Castro and under the agreements established between both governments.

“The Ministry expresses its sincere gratitude to the Government of the United Mexican States for its cooperation and constructive participation throughout this process, which ensured a smooth and orderly transfer in accordance with mutual respect and international standards,” the Ministry detailed.

The Government of South Sudan affirmed that the Mexican national was treated with respect for his human dignity and fundamental rights during his temporary stay in the country. It also noted that Mexico provided a formal guarantee that Jesús Muñoz “will not be subjected to torture, inhuman or degrading treatment, or undue prosecution upon his return.”

It is worth noting that President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo explained last May that the United States had not informed her government of the Mexican national’s deportation to South Sudan, and that they were therefore verifying his location in the country to determine whether he wanted to be repatriated.
