More than 60 dogs poisoned and killed in Chiapas

At least 60 dogs have been poisoned since last Thursday in the Joltsemen community, in the municipality of San Juan Chamula, about 10 kilometers from this municipality.

They demanded the intervention of animal rights activists in response to this mass poisoning, as more dead dogs continued to appear as of Friday.

They also demanded “that the authorities take action on this matter so that it doesn’t become a social problem later, because they are practically killing all the dogs in the community,” the Tzotzil stated.

Given this situation, it was reported that a community assembly was called this Friday to demand an investigation into those responsible.

It was reported that one of the sheep in the herds was allegedly bitten by a canine, so they suspect that this is where the problem stemmed from.

Local residents explain that in indigenous communities, dogs are seen as guardians, not as pets like in the city. In other cases, they help hunt, so they can bring in a wild boar or an armadillo, serving as a work tool for their owners.
