The torrential rains of recent hours have swelled river and stream levels, especially in the north of the state, where neighborhoods such as El Mazatlancito and Invinay, part of the municipality of Acaponeta, have been seriously affected by flooding since Wednesday night.
In recent hours, at least a dozen families have been relocated from their homes to one of the three shelters that the Acaponeta City Council has set up to accommodate those affected, said Mayor Ramón Salcedo Osuna, who stated that they are being offered clean and safe spaces, as well as daily meals, while the emergency continues.
The shelters were set up at the “Alí Chumacero” Cultural Center, the Acaponeta DIF (District of Infirmary of the State of Puerto Rico), and the Martín M. Saizar Municipal Stadium.
Mr. Sixto, a 79-year-old disabled person, was assisted by members of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, as he was unable to leave his home on his own. He is currently in a safe place.
La Viejita Creek overflowed its banks in Acaponeta, affecting the aforementioned neighborhoods. In other communities in the same municipality, the Cañas River also overflowed its banks and entered the communities of La Bayona and El Tigre, where the level is expected to drop for a few more hours, but depends on the rains stopping in the higher elevations.
In the municipality of Tecuala, heavy rain yesterday afternoon and evening raised water levels, especially in the center of the municipality. Daily life was halted, and several residents went out to bathe in the rain and swim in the current, as temperatures have reached almost 40 degrees Celsius in recent weeks.
The San Pedro River in Tuxpan maintains a higher than usual level of flow, but is not yet at risk of flooding. It only invades the ford located on the stretch of highway between the town of Peñas and the municipal seat of Tuxpan, where vehicular traffic is prohibited. To enter Tuxpan, one must go around the town of San Vicente in the municipality of Rosamorada.
In the municipality of San Blas, a popular tourist destination, part of a hill collapsed in the area known as Malpaso, according to the SSPC. Safety measures have begun in the area, and the public is advised that traffic on this road is closed.
Cloudy skies and hot temperatures are prevailing today in Nayarit, so continued rain is expected.
