The body of Silverio Villegas, a migrant originally from Michoacán who died during a raid on September 12 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Chicago, will arrive this afternoon in Irimbo, his hometown, announced the state’s Secretary of Immigration, Antonio Soto.
The state official said that the body is scheduled to arrive at the Guadalajara airport this Thursday at 5:00 p.m., from where he will be transferred to Morelia and then to Loma de Chupio, his hometown located in the eastern region of the state, between Maravatío and Angangueo. There, he will lie in state that evening and be buried at noon on Friday.
As you may recall, Silverio, 23, died during an immigration operation north of Chicago in which ICE agents participated. Activists, state governments, and the federal government have expressed their condemnation and are demanding justice.
Antonio Soto stated that it is up to federal immigration and government authorities to monitor the lawsuit against the U.S. federal police officer, through a private U.S. office. However, the Michoacán government will be closely monitoring everything that happens and will continue to support Silverio’s family as it has done so far.
The Michoacán Immigration Secretary stated that in recent days they traveled to Chicago, where they contacted Silverio’s parents and brother, with whom they coordinated to discuss the transfer and repatriation of the body.
“We will be monitoring the case regarding the lawsuit against the U.S. federal police, because we know there is evidence that Silverio did not drag the security agent as mentioned at the beginning, and there are videos to prove it,” he noted.
Meanwhile, in the local Congress, during the session on September 25, he condemned the actions of the Chicago police and demanded that the authorities of this country not allow this homicide to go unpunished, because Mexican migrants are good people who migrate to the northern country out of need for work, and it is not right to treat them like criminals.
