The Yucatecan capital is experiencing a massive mosquito attack. Residents of various areas of Mérida report that these insects are present at all hours and in all places.
After the strong storm that hit the same day as the massive blackout on the peninsula, a mosquito infestation reached the capital.
Residents report that since that day they have noticed an excessive presence of these insects, both in their homes and in public spaces.
They report that, while engaged in any type of activity, they are bitten repeatedly by them. Areas such as the Santa Fe subdivision have become a favorite haunt for these insects, as residents report seeing swarms of mosquitoes throughout the area.
Due to this situation, merchants and convenience stores report that insecticide sales have intensified, as people go to buy up to one to three units.
It’s worth mentioning that mosquito bites pose a serious danger to public health, as they cause diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, yellow fever, Zika virus, West Nile virus, and various encephalitis.
In response, Yucatecans are calling on the relevant authorities to implement fumigation measures in the Yucatecan capital.
