Reckless and Provocative Actions
After appearing at the UN General Assembly, Gustavo Petro decided to stay in New York and surprised everyone by joining a street protest in Dag Hammarskjold Square, in front of the UN headquarters. The Colombian president took a loudspeaker and didn’t hesitate to propose the overthrow of Donald Trump: “We hope that millions of men and women around the world decide to form the first military detachments. We believe that millions of us can be willing to fight. If we really start this, Trump’s voice and Netanyahu’s voice will be silenced by their own people.”
Along the same lines, Gustavo Petro shouted: “The nations of the world will contribute trained and armed men and women to form this great army. Disobey Trump’s order. Obey humanity’s order. You must respond with weapons, enough with diplomacy…” Naturally, the video went viral, the image was deplorable, and the United States took immediate action.
United States revokes visa
The State Department issued a statement formalizing the revocation of Gustavo Petro’s visa: “This morning, Colombian President Gustavo Petro addressed US soldiers on a New York street, urging them to disobey orders and incite violence. Due to these reckless and provocative actions, we will revoke Petro’s visa…”
Despite this decision, Gustavo Petro continued to provoke on social media: “I’m arriving in Bogotá. I no longer have a visa to travel to the United States. I don’t care. I don’t need a visa, but an ESTA, because I am not only a Colombian citizen, but a European citizen (of Italian descent), and I truly consider myself a free person in the world. Humanity should be free throughout the world. We have the human right to live on this planet.”
The point is that the granting of an ESTA is not automatic, even for citizens of visa-exempt countries, and is still subject to approval by US authorities. For Gustavo Petro, this is an unexpected and unnecessary problem, which sparked a wave of criticism in the Colombian community.
US Decision Impacts Mexico
The Colombian president has had a regrettable few months, with significant errors and a failure to assess their consequences. This US decision has an impact on Mexico because relations are very tense and disagreements are increasingly noticeable.
While Donald Trump meets with Javier Milei and Marco Rubio strengthens relations with Daniel Noboa and Nayib Bukele, Mexico maintains a distant relationship with them and is much closer ideologically to Gustavo Petro, Lula da Silva, and Gabriel Boric.
Although there are no official versions, Gustavo Petro’s attitude also resonated with Lula’s inner circle, who view the attitude provoked in New York as unnecessary. As if that weren’t enough, Petro also proposed removing the UN from the United States: “Mr. Trump has violated the founding principles of the UN. It’s time to move to a more democratic place. I propose Doha as the new headquarters of the United Nations.”
The truth is that in politics, there are battles that are won with delicate steps, subtle actions, and waiting for the right moment. Precisely none of these things characterize Gustavo Petro.
