On the extradition list

Arturo Millet Reyes, one of Yucatán’s major drug lords, is under investigation by U.S. authorities.

The Yucatecan businessman, a member of a family influential in Yucatán’s economy and politics, is allegedly linked to organized crime, specifically the powerful Sinaloa Cartel.

His name and his connection to this criminal group surfaced during the so-called “trial of the century” against Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, held in a New York court.

The U.S. justice system found “El Chapo” guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment in a U.S. prison.

Tirso “N,” the soccer player who for decades was his operative and right-hand man in southeastern Mexico, testified against “El Chapo” in exchange for leniency from U.S. authorities.

The soccer player provided details about how he operated for the cartel, and it was during his testimony that the Yucatecan businessman’s name came to light.

The statements confirmed the rumors circulating in Yucatán about his possible ties to organized crime and that he was their connection in Yucatán.

Although Millet Reyes came from a well-to-do family, at his young age he didn’t have the resources to invest in a professional soccer team and spend large sums of money, especially since the franchise was in a severe financial crisis. There were no sponsorships, and stadium attendance was poor, averaging only 4,000 people per game.

The alleged drug trafficker declared in the United States that he acquired the soccer team and installed Millet Reyes as its president; in other words, he was his front man.

According to reports, the club was used to launder money from organized crime.

Tirso “N” stated that in Yucatán he worked not only for “El Chapo” but also for Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, leader of the Juárez Cartel.

Now, with these statements, the United States justice system has him in its sights; while he is not a priority target, he does become extraditable due to his ties to drug trafficking groups, crimes prosecuted and punished by the American justice system.

Millet Reyes is using the considerable political influence he, his family, and his wife, Gabriela López Gómez, wield to evade Mexican justice. They have been at the top of the political ladder, not only in Yucatán, but throughout the Peninsula, for the last 17 years.
