More than 15 organizations affiliated with the Coordination of Independent Organizations of Chiapas (OPEZ), following a statewide meeting where they discussed various issues such as justice, indigenous rights, high electricity rates, and the release of political prisoners, announced this Monday that the march scheduled for that same date in San Cristóbal de las Casas has been suspended. By majority vote, they agreed to hold the march on November 29 in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
In this regard, Octavio Sunun Aguilar, leader of OPEZ-Histórica, from the Highlands of Chiapas region, indicated that his organization will have other activities, including establishing a dialogue table with the government to discuss issues such as high electricity rates, security, the release of political prisoners, and other demands. He stated that they will not participate in the march on the morning of November 29 in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
“We will not participate in the November 29th march because our demands are different, but we will be waiting for the dialogue table to be established to continue negotiations on high electricity rates, the release of political prisoners, and other demands of our organization. We will not participate in the march scheduled for tomorrow, November 25th, in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, although other organizations will send delegations to join the protest,” he stated.
Meanwhile, representatives of another organization reported that they are preparing for a march on April 10, 2026, commemorating the anniversary of General Emiliano Zapata’s death. Several organizations will join this protest, while those from the Highlands region will meet to decide whether to join this demonstration by the farmers.
