Saint Lucy, born in 283 and died in 304 in Italy, is recognized by the Catholic Church as a Christian martyr of Sicilian origin who suffered persecution for her faith. She is one of the eight women—including the Virgin Mary—explicitly commemorated in Catholic tradition and one of the best-known virgin martyrs in both Italy and the Catholic world. She is also venerated as the patron saint of the blind and those with eye diseases. Lucy was accused of professing Christianity and martyred in Syracuse, where she died on December 13, 304, a date on which thousands of faithful honor her every year.
During a visit this Wednesday to the Church of Saint Lucy, located about four blocks from the central park of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, it was confirmed that everything is ready for the celebration on December 13. Thousands of parishioners will come to venerate the image of the neighborhood’s patron saint, while the novenas continue to be held nightly. Starting December 12, the main area of the plaza will be closed to allow for the influx of visitors during the community’s most important festival.
Parishioners say that Saint Lucy is venerated for the miracles attributed to her intercession, especially those related to the healing of eye problems. “I recovered my eye because she is the nurse, the doctor, and the advocate of eyes. Her feast day is celebrated every December 13. They are already celebrating the novenas every night, so the Santa Lucía neighborhood is in full celebration,” shared one devotee.
Leading up to the main day, religious and community activities will take place, including masses, baptisms, first communions, music, and various gatherings. On December 13th, starting at 3:00 a.m., the traditional “mañanitas” will be sung in honor of Saint Lucy. Outside the church, several musical groups will entertain the crowd, while in the plaza, traffic officers, Civil Protection personnel, and Municipal Police will be present to ensure the safety of attendees and regulate traffic on the surrounding streets.
