To bring classical music to underprivileged children in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, the Schule’lte’ “Alma de Madera” Ensemble will offer a concert this Saturday in collaboration with the Creative Seedbed Choir in Motion from the indigenous community of Bachajón, in the municipality of Chilón.
In an interview, Katia Alondra Girón Marroquín, a recipient of the Chiapas Program for the Promotion of Artistic Creation and Development (PECDA) 2025-2026, explained that they have been preparing the project for approximately four months.
“It can have a positive impact on them, since music brings a lot of peace, and especially in these vulnerable communities, it allows them to connect with something as beautiful as music,” she said.
Among the melodies to be performed are La Tortuga del Arenal, an arrangement of The Nutcracker, Luna de Xelajul, and an arrangement of the Christmas Festival, with the Carlos Jurado Cultural Center serving as the venue.
The project was called Weaving Cords of Identity: Reclaiming Music Through Music and Language. The ensemble, formed two years ago, is made up of five students from the Higher Institute of Music of the state of Veracruz, and they now seek to bring joy to children.
