The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has detected that the ultra-Orthodox sect, Lev Tahor, originating in Jerusalem and facing multiple accusations of child abuse, pedophilia, kidnapping, and child neglect, is operating in the state of Chiapas.
Therefore, they arrested Yoel “A”, identified as one of the sect’s members, and charged him with organized crime for the purpose of committing human trafficking (specifically, forced marriages).
At the initial hearing, Yoel “A’s” defense requested an extension of the constitutional deadline to gather evidence in his favor. Therefore, while the judge decides whether or not to formally charge him, he will remain in pretrial detention.
The FGR announced that the Lev Tahor sect abducts minors from their place of origin to force them into marriages with adult members of the same group.
Yoel “A” was arrested in the state of Chiapas by members of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) and agents of the Federal Ministerial Police (PFM), from the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
The Lev Tahor sect was founded in Jerusalem in 1988 and, due to the various accusations it has faced, its members have constantly changed locations to avoid arrest.
It operates primarily in Israel, New York, Guatemala, and Mexico, countries where authorities have managed to arrest several of its leaders and rescue minors.
This is how Mexican authorities were able to locate its area of operation in the state of Chiapas.
