In Nuevo Laredo, there are places that aren’t just visited, they’re remembered with longing. One of them is undoubtedly Los Carboncitos taqueria, a place that since 1980 has become a meeting point, a place for celebrations, and a source of flavor for thousands of Nuevo Laredo families.
They say that remembering is reliving, and proof of this is a 1990 video that has recently resurfaced, showing what this iconic restaurant looked like in a commercial that aired on Channel 2 in the border city.
The images highlight details that evoke nostalgia today: the old sign, tables full of diners enjoying the evening, and the classic taquero preparing charcoal-grilled and al pastor tacos, while the atmosphere reflected what the place has always been: food, family, and tradition.
For many Nuevo Laredo residents, these scenes represent memories of youth, special celebrations, and nights out that are now part of the city’s history.
Located on the corner of Maclovio Herrera and Allende streets, right in the heart of downtown, Los Carboncitos earned its fame thanks to its unmistakable charcoal-grilled flavor. Their specialty, tacos al pastor, became their signature dish, but the menu offered much more.
The restaurant offered over 26 varieties of charcoal-grilled tacos, including:
Alambre (grilled meat and vegetables)
Steak with cheese
Pork chop with chorizo and cheese
Choriqueso (chorizo and cheese)
And, of course, the famous “carboncitos” (small, thick tacos).
After closing for a while, Los Carboncitos reopened in 2022, fulfilling the wishes of generations of customers who never let the memory fade. The reopening was so significant that it even featured the presence of Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas.
Despite closing permanently in 2024, Los Carboncitos represents a bridge between the past and the present, preserving the flavor that made them famous and adapting to a new era without losing their essence.
