What do Mexicans say about a Trump invasion of Mexico?

The President of the United States escalated his rhetoric against Mexico, stating that he will order ground attacks against the cartels, which would amount to an invasion of Mexican territory. His statements, made in an interview with Fox News, provoked immediate reactions on social media, where the political, legal, and bilateral impact of a potential military intervention is being discussed.

During the interview, Donald Trump asserted that his administration has reduced drug trafficking by sea and that his strategy will now focus on ground operations against the cartels. He claimed that these organizations “control Mexico” and linked drug trafficking to hundreds of thousands of deaths annually in the United States, attributing it to a crisis that affects entire families.

Trump maintained that consumption and death rates “are starting to go down,” although he acknowledged that they will always remain high as long as there is even one victim. He also compared this strategy to his border policy, asserting that under his administration the border was “closed” and that “nobody gets in, nobody even tries,” an argument he used to defend the effectiveness of his actions.

“The cartels are controlling Mexico. It’s very, very sad to see what has happened to that country, but the cartels are in charge,” he said.

After the statements were released, numerous reactions emerged on digital platforms, with conflicting opinions about a potential U.S. military incursion into Mexican territory. The comments reflected concern about a scenario of violence, questions about the legality of foreign intervention, and messages of support for direct action against criminal groups:

“Is that right or wrong?”

“I think if that happens, it will be chaos in Mexico.”

“He wasn’t lying.”

“What difficult days for the Morena party supporters.”

“Not only would any intervention in Mexico be illegal, but it’s also delusional to believe that this would end the cartels.”

“It was about time, welcome.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reiterated on several occasions that she will not allow any type of intervention by the U.S. government in Mexican territory. According to her previous statements, Donald Trump has suggested to her on more than one occasion the deployment of troops to Mexico, a proposal to which she has consistently responded with a stance of bilateral cooperation without military intervention.

Sheinbaum has emphasized that the relationship between the two countries should be based on collaboration and respect for sovereignty, a position that contrasts with the proposal of armed action put forward by Trump.

Regarding these statements, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum assured that they will seek to have better communication with the U.S. government. “We are going to strengthen communication; that’s why I asked Juan Ramón de la Fuente, if necessary, to meet with the Secretary of State, to further strengthen the relationship, to ensure they have all the information, and, within the framework of what we have been working on, to strengthen coordination,” she said.

Just last November 3, Donald Trump invaded Venezuela to capture the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores.
