This is how Claudia Sheinbaum responded to Donald Trump’s controversial statements.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her government could establish communication with her US counterpart, Donald Trump, to strengthen coordination between the two countries, following the US president’s controversial statements regarding his strategy to combat drug trafficking.
Donald Trump declared that ground attacks would begin to combat drug trafficking, which has been interpreted as US military action on Mexican soil. The US president stated that they have already eliminated 97% of drug trafficking by water.
As we have reported on MARCA MX, Trump’s statements come amid tensions between the United States and Latin America following the US intervention in Venezuela, which culminated in the arrest of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Donald Trump declared that they would begin ground attacks to combat drug trafficking, which has been interpreted as US military action on Mexican soil. Claudia Sheinbaum says they will speak with Donald Trump “if necessary”
Following Trump’s controversial statements, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said she asked the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, to contact the U.S. State Department to establish a dialogue. She added that “if necessary” they will speak directly with Donald Trump.
“Because of the statements President Trump has made in recent days, which we consider part of his communication style, I asked Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente yesterday to make direct contact with the Secretary of State and, if necessary, speak with President Trump to strengthen coordination,” the mayor explained.
Previously, Sheinbaum had categorically condemned the U.S. intervention in Venezuela and called for respect for the sovereignty of all nations, maintaining that respect for the rights of others is peace, as Benito Juárez said. She emphasized that this is Mexico’s position regarding international law.
This is not the first time Trump has referenced Mexico and drug trafficking. Hours after Nicolás Maduro’s arrest, he declared that drug cartels are in charge in Mexican territory and that “something has to be done” about it.
“The cartels are controlling Mexico. It’s very, very sad to see what has happened to that country,” he said.
It’s worth noting that Claudia Sheinbaum and Donald Trump have had several telephone conversations to discuss issues such as the tariffs the US president wanted to impose on Mexican products, but they have not had a formal in-person meeting. The closest they came was when they both attended the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington.
