A total of eight neighborhoods in the Chiapas state capital were identified as having the highest crime rates in 2025, six of which are located in the city center, where 13.28 percent of the 2,666 crimes registered throughout the year were concentrated.

According to figures from the Chiapas State Attorney General’s Office, the central neighborhoods with the highest number of incidents were Barrio San Francisco, with 90 crimes; El Calvario, with 70; Barrio San Roque, with 67; Barrio Santo Domingo, with 61; and Barrio San Marcos, which also appears among the areas with the highest crime rates. Authorities acknowledged that, unlike previous years, the highest concentration of crimes has shifted toward the city’s central area.

During a virtual conference, the Attorney General of the State of Veracruz, Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, indicated that the city center is the area with the highest concentration of robberies, negligent injuries, property damage, and domestic violence. He stated that these crimes are linked to alcohol consumption and tend to increase on weekends and at night.

“We are going to review the operations of many bars and cantinas in downtown Tuxtla Gutiérrez… here we see that most of the crimes of robbery, negligent injuries, property damage, and domestic violence occur in the city center, typically in the area where alcohol is consumed,” he affirmed.

The Attorney General also acknowledged that robbery has increased in the capital, and that a large number of cases have been reported in the city center, where most commercial activity is concentrated. Although arrests have been made, the crime rate has remained constant, with at least five robberies reported in just the first two weeks of the year.

Added to this list are the neighborhoods of Las Granjas, Plan de Ayala, and Terán, which registered 75, 74, and 60 crimes respectively. In these areas, the main issues are related to drug dealing, domestic violence, and assault, although cases of intentional homicide and femicide were also documented.

Regarding this situation, Liliana Ibeth López Gordillo, coordinator of the CENTRA clinic, warned that a high incidence of alcohol and drug use among minors has been detected in Las Granjas and Terán, a factor that directly impacts the increase in violence.

“The incidence of alcohol and drug use has increased to the point that it has already manifested itself in children between eight and ten years old in the state… there are hotspots in different parts of the state,” she explained.

In this context, during tours carried out in the center of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, banners placed by residents have been observed, in which they warn about taking matters into their own hands against alleged thieves, reflecting the level of social tension that is experienced in the areas with the highest number of crimes.
