With the start of the year, the UNAM’s Center for Philosophy and Letters (Cephcis) is opening registration for its language courses, which will begin in February. The program includes eight languages and is available to the general public, regardless of whether they are a student at the university.

Currently, classes are offered in English, Chinese, Mayan, Italian, French, Spanish, Japanese, and German.

Levels and Placement Exam Date

Courses can be taken at beginner or advanced levels, depending on the language. For now, Chinese is only offered at level one.

Those interested who already have some knowledge can take a placement exam on Saturday, January 24.

The formats also vary depending on the language. Some courses are in-person, others online, and others in a blended format.

This is the case with Italian, which is taught entirely online, while English and French classes are in-person. It is recommended to review the specific announcement for each language to learn about the available levels and formats.

According to Karla Ávila Durán, head of the Language Department at Cephcis, English is the most in-demand language, both because of Mexico’s proximity to the United States and because speaking it is a requirement for many students.

She also indicated that the community for Spanish courses for foreigners and French courses has grown, with the latter receiving a good response this time.

Although they do not currently offer formal accreditation courses, the studies offered at the center can serve as preparation for certification exams.

In some cases, an equivalency certificate can be issued according to the curriculum.

Furthermore, it was reported that they will seek to become a certification center in the future, starting with Spanish.

Registration for the placement exam will be open until Thursday, January 22, while those entering directly into Level 1 can register until Friday, January 30, the deadline for payment.

Classes will begin between February 3rd and 7th, depending on the language and the assigned day for each group.

The registration process involves requesting registration through https://idiomas.cephcis.unam.mx/registro and completing the form with the information exactly as it appears on your official ID.

There is no minimum education requirement, but students must be at least 14 years old to register. ID is only requested for verification during the first class session.

How much does it cost to learn languages? These are the discounts at UNAM.

Regarding prices, most courses cost 3,200 pesos per semester. Spanish classes for foreigners, which have more weekly hours, cost 4,200 pesos.

A 15% discount is offered to current students, a 50% discount to UNAM students, and additional discounts are available for regular students of the Center.

The groups are small, no more than 20 people, although the average is usually 10 people per group, allowing for more personalized attention.

The option of attending classes by the week will also be offered for those who cannot participate for the entire term.

Language classes are primarily held at the Cephcis Dragones campus. Classes are held Monday through Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In specific cases, some groups may move to the Rendón Peniche campus, although the aim is to concentrate activities at the Dragones campus.

Ávila Durán invites the community to take advantage of the start of the year to resume or begin learning a language.

Whether as part of an academic or personal goal, and to explore not only the educational offerings but also the cultural spaces and activities that complement language learning.

The UNAM’s Cephcis offers Spanish and culture immersion programs, primarily aimed at foreigners. One of these programs will begin next Monday the 26th, will last three weeks and cost $1,500, which includes Spanish classes, cultural activities and visits to different parts of the State.
