Measles cases are on the rise in Chiapas

Although health authorities in Chiapas do not report an alarming increase or widespread outbreak of measles recently,
according to the Daily Measles Outbreak Report issued by the General Directorate of Epidemiology of the Federal Ministry of Health, there is a rapid increase in confirmed cases.

According to the report, in December 2025, Chiapas had 235 cases, and as of January 18, this number had risen to 457. This raises concerns about the behavior of the measles outbreak, which indicates that transmission of the virus remains active.

According to official information, of the 430 accumulated confirmed cases of measles in the 2025–2026 period, 183 correspond to the current year, as well as more than a thousand probable cases reported, reflecting an outbreak that continues to be active in different regions of the state, especially in northern Chiapas.

In recent days, there have been reports of an increase in measles cases in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the state capital, and in other municipalities, such as Tapachula, a border city with Guatemala.

In this Central American country, health authorities in Guatemala confirmed a measles outbreak, raising the number of confirmed cases to 38 as of January 20. This significant increase comes after years without endemic cases of the disease.

While no deaths have been reported, health authorities in the state of Chiapas have reinforced their calls for the entire population to get vaccinated, especially children. This campaign has been intensified in all municipalities with the support of the Mexican Army to strengthen preventive measures and avoid further spread.

The Chiapas Health Secretariat affirms that they have the virus under control thanks to vaccination and monitoring, focusing on young children and international travelers. However, Chiapas is not reporting a measles crisis, but rather a state of alert.
