Through multidisciplinary efforts and collaboration with Indigenous communities, the Government of Michoacán has consolidated the recovery of Lake Pátzcuaro after years of drought and environmental degradation, restoring 500 hectares in two years and setting a goal to continue cleaning the Chapultepec and Erongarícuaro canals in 2026.

The comprehensive strategy included combating water theft, rehabilitating springs, and using the Guardian Forest satellite system, which detected illegal water intakes and regulated water use. This was achieved with the support of residents of communities surrounding the lake’s watershed, who have actively participated in the process.

At the first 2026 meeting of the Inter-institutional Committee for the Defense of Lake Pátzcuaro, progress reports from 2024 and 2025 were presented, along with projects such as the modernization of the Chapultepec irrigation district, canal cleaning, and spring rehabilitation.

More than 2,000 temporary jobs were created to manage 56 sites, 89 water sources were cleared, and 10 navigation channels were maintained. By 2025, more than 50 springs had reappeared, and five more were discovered, with the removal of approximately 35,000 cubic meters of waste.

The work included clearing 30,000 square meters of weeds, dredging 5,000 cubic meters, and removing invasive vegetation. In addition, 100,000 whitefish fry and 30,000 acúmara fry were released, and between 2024 and 2025, 83 springs were restored.

The projects allowed for the removal of more than 41,000 cubic meters of silt; in 2025 alone, 96,700 cubic meters were removed. The restoration revitalized canoeing and tourist activities such as the Day of the Dead celebrations.

These actions are complemented by the goal of reforesting 10 million trees in the state, of which 1.5 million will be for the lake basin, as well as the investment of 30 million pesos in the temporary employment program and 147 million from the Michoacán Plan to modernize treatment plants, consolidating the state as a national benchmark in the defense of strategic ecosystems.
