The federal government is reviewing information regarding the alleged smuggling of weapons and ammunition from the neighboring country into Mexico, in order to discuss the matter with the U.S. government, stated Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
After the U.S. newspaper The New York Times reported that Mexican cartels are using ammunition and weapons designed for the U.S. military, produced in a U.S. military-owned facility, and that these weapons were allegedly smuggled into Mexico, the mayor addressed the issue at her daily press conference.
“We are reviewing this report so that we can discuss this matter with the U.S. government and determine how it is possible that these weapons, which are for the exclusive use of the U.S. military, are entering Mexico,” she indicated.
Furthermore, regarding the kidnapping of miners in Sinaloa, the mayor detailed that there are detainees, and that support is being offered to the victims’ families.
“From the moment their disappearance, their kidnapping, was announced, the Mexican government’s security cabinet was on high alert and searching for them. There are detainees in this case, and it was the detainees themselves who provided the information that was later obtained,” she stated.
She added that the investigations are being conducted in contact with the Canadian-owned mining company. She also asked the Ministry of the Interior to remain in contact with the families. “We deeply regret what happened and we are with the families, and we hope that such a situation will never happen again,” the president expressed.
