For the friendly match between Mexico and Iceland, an impressive security operation was deployed, transforming La Corregidora stadium into a security bunker.
After the violence unleashed by the capture and killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as ‘El Mencho,’ the match between Mexico and Iceland in Querétaro was at risk of not taking place; fear gripped the fans who had tickets for the game.
However, Mexicans and even Icelanders gathered at La Corregidora to watch the match.
The parents of Anton Einarsson, Iceland’s goalkeeper, arrived in Mexico days before the chaos gripped the country; however, this Wednesday, they exclusively told EL UNIVERSAL Deportes that they felt safe.
“We arrived in Mexico before everything happened. Our son is part of the National Team, and we go to every one of his matches,” said Anna, his mother.
“He feels safe, we saw him at the hotel, and everyone feels safe. We try not to dwell on what happened, we focus on the game and enjoying Mexico. It’s been a wonderful trip, and we love everything here: the food, the people, the city, everything,” she added.
Six security rings were implemented for this match, and dozens of patrol cars and a helicopter protected the thousands of fans who attended the stadium.
“We feel safe seeing people with their children, but I’ll be even happier when it’s all over,” Anna concluded.
