Two hooded individuals used a Molotov cocktail to set fire to the vehicle of Jesús Iván Macías Rodríguez, the Morena party representative for District 7 at the Coahuila Electoral Institute (IEC).

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning, March 17, in the state capital, while the car was parked and the perpetrators were moving through the area.

The National Executive Committee (CEN) of Morena reported that the attack took place at 4:52 a.m. and was captured on security camera footage, which shows the perpetrators burning the interior of the vehicle with the Molotov cocktail.

Morena also denounced the attack as an act of intimidation and violence against the movement and demanded a thorough investigation.

“The National Executive Committee (CEN) of Morena condemns the act of intimidation that occurred this morning in Coahuila against our Movement (…) an unacceptable and alarming act. We demand that the Coahuila State Attorney General’s Office initiate a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation to clarify the facts and determine responsibility,” the party stated in a press release.

As political parties prepare for the upcoming elections for governor and the Coahuila State Congress this year, Morena emphasized its commitment to promoting free and peaceful elections.

“In Morena, we will always promote free and peaceful elections where ideas and projects are debated, not where intimidation prevails. We will continue to revolutionize consciences, house by house, until we achieve a better future for the people of Coahuila,” the CEN affirmed.

A surveillance camera captured the moment two hooded individuals walked down the street in the capital of Coahuila, their faces concealed by black clothing and caps.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., the two men approached the vehicle of the Morena party representative and unexpectedly began attacking it.

The video shows one of the hooded individuals throwing an object at the right side of the vehicle, then approaching the passenger-side window and breaking it.

The second person with him approached and threw what appeared to be a flammable liquid, prompting the first man to light a lighter and throw it inside the vehicle.

The vehicle immediately burst into flames, and both individuals fled the scene.

Through his social media accounts, Jesús Iván Macías explained that the incident occurred near his home, where he was with his family. Furthermore, he announced that he will file a complaint so that those responsible can be identified.

“I will file the corresponding complaint with the Laguna regional prosecutor’s office for follow-up and to find those responsible, as this was clearly a direct attack against me. I will not provide any further details so as not to hinder the investigation. I call upon the state attorney general, Federico Fernández Montañez, to expedite the investigation,” he wrote on his social media accounts.
