During Holy Week, beach destinations in Sonora, such as San Carlos, Puerto Peñasco, and Bahía de Kino, see a surge in Airbnb bookings due to high tourist demand.
Sonora’s beaches experience the highest number of lodging activity on digital platforms during Holy Week, with occupancy rates reaching up to 90% in destinations like San Carlos, Puerto Peñasco, and Bahía de Kino.
Guadalupe Marcela Martínez, a volunteer leader in the Airbnb community in Sonora, reported that during this season, demand shifts to tourist areas, where the flow of visitors increases considerably.
“Everything beach-related, everything tourist-oriented… I assure you it’s full; if not 100%, we’re at about 90%,” she explained.
According to the volunteer leader’s estimates, there are around 1,000 registered hosts in Hermosillo, a similar number to that of Guaymas-San Carlos, while in Puerto Peñasco there are approximately 500, and in Bahía de Kino, between 30 and 50 available listings.
“During Holy Week, all beach areas and tourist destinations experience the highest demand; in places like San Carlos, Puerto Peñasco, and Bahía de Kino, occupancy is practically at full capacity, because that’s where most visitors are concentrated,” he noted.
In Hermosillo, although there is a wide range of accommodations available, the dynamics are different, since occupancy depends on specific events and doesn’t necessarily remain constant throughout the week.
Beach destinations maintain steady demand during this period, driven by recreational tourism, which positions them as the main spots for temporary lodging in the state.
In addition to Holy Week, the activity of hosts also increases during periods with large-scale events or holiday seasons, where demand adjusts according to the type of tourism and the location of available accommodations.
