The Cabrera Sarabia family had been operating in Mexico City for years, but not as a cartel, says expert

In Mexico City, three men were arrested with 50 kilograms of methamphetamine. Federal authorities indicated that the captured men are members of a cell called Cabrera Sarabia, a structure linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.

The Security Cabinet described the arrest of the three men as a “direct blow to the finances and operations of groups that generate violence.”

This is the first time reports have surfaced regarding the presence of this criminal organization in Mexico City, although previous reports indicated its operation in Durango, Sinaloa, and Zacatecas.

Following the arrest of the three men, Infobae Mexico contacted consultant and security expert David Saucedo to delve deeper into the role of this criminal organization in Mexico City.

The expert noted that the group was initially linked to the faction formerly led by Joaquín Guzmán Loera, but later established ties with the son of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.

“They started in Durango as allies of El Chapo Guzmán. There were internal conflicts, like those the Sinaloa Cartel has had, and they sided with Ismael Zambada’s hitmen. But they had already been operating in Mexico City and other territories for some time, not exactly as a cartel,” Saucedo points out.

According to Saucedo, the Sinaloa Cartel’s role in Mexico City is to supply illicit drugs to local organizations in the capital, for which the city was divided into zones. He emphasized that the local organizations receive narcotics from the major criminal groups: the Pacific Cartel itself, La Familia Michoacana, and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The Cabrera Sarabia family expanded at the request of the Sinaloa Cartel to serve as a transmission channel and coordinate shipments from the Guadalajara metropolitan area to Durango, David Saucedo explains.

“It was always a discreet role, a secondary role. They didn’t establish a plaza leadership as such, they weren’t involved in high-impact events, massacres, multiple homicides, or kidnappings.”

The Cabrera Sarabia family’s role consisted of focusing on coordination and logistics, staying away from armed attacks.

“The main supplier of illicit drugs in the nation’s capital has always been the Sinaloa Cartel factions. And since the city is so large, they really divided themselves into sectors.”

When questioned about the importance of the methamphetamine seizure, Saucedo points out that while it is a seizure that does represent a blow to the Cabrera Sarabia family, it doesn’t dismantle them.

“It’s a mid-level blow, I can’t underestimate it […] It’s understood that this shipment, given its size, was intended for consumption in Mexico City,” shared David Saucedo.
