Palm Sunday marked the beginning of Holy Week, one of the most important commemorations for millions of Catholics in Mexico and around the world, with its most significant days taking place this weekend.
Today, April 2nd, these days of devotion begin, celebrated annually over a weekend: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday.
During this time, thousands of religious celebrations take place in major cities and other municipalities, including Stations of the Cross, reenactments of the Last Supper, and Masses with dozens of attendees.
In response, some government authorities have decided to implement a so-called “dry law,” prohibiting the sale of alcohol as a measure to prevent serious incidents amidst the religious gatherings.
These are the confirmed states where a dry law will be in effect this Holy Thursday and Good Friday, as well as Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, and we’ll tell you if Yucatán will implement the measure.
Where will there be a dry law this weekend?
The dry law will primarily affect central Mexico this weekend, prohibiting the sale of alcohol.
In Mexico City, the dry law will be implemented in the boroughs of Iztapalapa, Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, and Gustavo A. Madero.
In Iztapalapa, home to the country’s most famous Stations of the Cross procession and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a dry law will be implemented in at least eight neighborhoods:
San Ignacio
Santa Bárbara
La Asunción
San Lucas
San Pedro
San Miguel
San Pablo
San José
A dry law was also confirmed in the following municipalities of the State of Mexico:
Cuautitlán Izcalli
Mexicaltzingo
San Mateo Atenco
Huamantla
Regarding the hours: the measure will be in effect from 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, 2026, in Cuautitlán Izcalli, Cuajimalpa, and Huamantla.
And in Mexicaltzingo and San Mateo Atenco, the alcohol ban begins at 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026.
Another state where there will be a dry law is Tlaxcala, in the municipality of Huamantla.
Will there be a dry law in Yucatán during Holy Week 2026?
Although a dry law will be in effect in various parts of the country due to religious celebrations, Yucatán has not yet announced a similar measure.
A dry law was previously declared in Yucatán for the judicial elections, but the measure has not been reinstated since then.
