Mondragón University Mexico announced the launch of the first edition of its Professional Sommelier Diploma program in San Miguel de Allende, with the goal of strengthening the professionalization of the food and wine sector in the region.
This program aims to train specialists capable of elevating wine culture in Mexico through comprehensive training that combines theory and practice. The initiative responds to the growing demand for qualified professionals in the restaurant and tourism industries, especially in destinations where the gastronomic experience is a key element.
The diploma program offers participants tools to develop skills in service, analysis, and wine appreciation. It also includes the study of more than 130 labels, including wines, spirits, and beers, as well as specialized tasting and learning materials.

The curriculum includes topics such as cellar organization, service protocols, national and international spirits, beer styles, coffee extraction methods, advanced food pairings, and artisanal cheese tasting.
This approach allows students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the industry, integrating technical knowledge with sensory experiences.

The program includes educational experiences such as winery visits, as well as access to academic resources that enhance learning. As an added benefit, participants will have the opportunity to participate in an international experience at the Basque Culinary Center, located in the Basque Country.
This global perspective aims to boost students’ professional development and expand their opportunities within the industry.
During the presentation, industry representatives emphasized the importance of these types of programs for improving service quality and strengthening regional competitiveness.
