Gunpowder echoed through the center of San Miguel de Allende as a symbol of the triumph of good over evil with the traditional burning of Judas, marking the end of Holy Week. More than 20 figures, including devils, witches, and representations of Donald Trump, exploded amidst the cheers of hundreds of spectators, many of them from the foreign community residing in the town.

Moments after the noon peal of the Parish Church bells, the blast of the first Judas effigy thrilled the hundreds of attendees already gathered in the city’s main square, right in front of the old municipal building.

The handcrafted cardboard figures were already hanging from ropes from the balconies of the former municipal building and all the way to the main plaza, awaiting their turn.

Witches, brides, devils, elegant skeletons, mummies, and a couple of figures representing Donald Trump were blown to bits in the thunderous explosions.

The most “acclaimed” and reviled figure was that of the President of the United States. Mexicans and foreigners joined in shouts as it was about to explode. “…asshole, asshole!”, “Out, out!” and “faggot, faggot!” were some of the chants heard before the eruption against the blond figure in a blue suit, which brought the celebration to a close.

After the burning of the 23 figures, dozens sought to take photos with the remains of the Judas effigies, while the organizers offered the heads that hadn’t been destroyed by the gunpowder for up to 400 pesos.
