Environmentalists denounce possible ecocide in San Cristóbal wetlands area

The Southern Zone Council for the Defense of Wetlands in San Cristóbal de las Casas lamented the repeated felling of several trees in the southern part of the city, allegedly for housing construction, without any intervention from authorities to stop the environmental destruction. This is despite the fact that this area is part of the Almolonga zone, a spring that supplies water to thousands of users.

In a telephone interview, Mr. Nicolás expressed his concern about the events in the Cubito area, located on Benito Juárez Avenue. He indicated that a change in land use for housing construction is suspected, which would affect part of the Almolonga spring.

During a visit to the area, the felling of more than 30 pine and cypress trees was confirmed, while several pieces of wood remain inside the area known as “El Cubito.” Residents are demanding an explanation for the environmental damage caused in the Jovel Valley. “It’s deplorable what’s happening in El Cubito. This area is part of the Almolonga, which supplies water to the population. The trees were cut down because, with the change in land use, they intend to build houses,” he said.
