The Mexican Employers’ Confederation (COPARMEX) in the city of Xalapa condemned the burning of five cargo trucks on May 4th on highways in northern Veracruz. Alleged members of the National Front for the Struggle for Socialism (FNLS) reportedly seized the vehicles as a form of protest, demanding the release of a local resident who has been detained for over five years and justice for the murder of another person.

In response, COPARMEX issued a statement demanding that Veracruz state authorities investigate the incident and punish those responsible for the arson. The organization asserted that the trucks belonged to a company affiliated with the Confederation and that the safety of its employees was endangered. Furthermore, they called on the government to guarantee the security and legality of the productive sector.

These events, they mentioned, occurred four days after a security panel meeting was held in Xalapa between members of COPARMEX and security authorities from all three levels of government, including the Armed Forces, the National Guard, the National Intelligence Center, and municipal authorities.

At this meeting, they stated, “the need to strengthen the rule of law, guarantee security conditions, and consolidate an environment of legal certainty that allows companies to invest, grow, and generate jobs was reiterated,” according to the official statement.

On the morning of Monday, October 4, several sections of highways in northern Veracruz were blocked with burning cargo trucks, allegedly by members of the National Front for the Struggle for Socialism (FNLS), who were protesting and demanding the release of a resident who has been detained for more than five years, and justice for the murder of another person.

The blockades occurred on sections of highways affecting the municipalities of Tantoyuca, Chalma, Benito Juárez, and Ixhuatlán de Madero. They also caused delays for cargo trucks and private vehicles in the area, as they were stranded on the roads.

Because of this, the governor of Veracruz stated on Monday that she was aware of the situation and was coordinating with the Attorney General’s Office of Hidalgo, as it was believed that the protesters had moved into that state.
