The Veracruz-Boca del Río metropolitan area registered heat indexes of 50 degrees Celsius today.
A southerly wind event (gusts of hot air) and a heat wave raised temperatures across most of Veracruz state.
According to the Gulf Central Basin Authority of the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the highest temperature recorded today was in the port of Coatzacoalcos (southern Veracruz) at 36.9 degrees Celsius with a heat index of 48 degrees.
In the Veracruz-Boca del Río tourist area, the thermometer reached 36.5 degrees Celsius, but the heat index was higher than the state average at 50 degrees.
In the port of Tuxpan, in northern Veracruz, thermometers registered 36 degrees Celsius, but with a heat index of 47 degrees; while in the city of Xalapa, the state capital, temperatures of 34.2 degrees Celsius were recorded.
A southerly wind event will maintain high temperatures throughout the state of Veracruz and a low probability of rain, due to the heat wave, according to reports from the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
The southerly wind event is producing gusts of between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour along the northern coast, the Perote Valley, and Orizaba; and between 50 and 70 kilometers per hour in Los Tuxtlas and the J. Carranza-Acayucan region.
Regarding the Climate Alert, temperatures and accumulated rainfall are expected to be near or slightly above average for Veracruz during the first half of May.
Climate models have generated several scenarios for the May-June 2026 period in Veracruz. The first scenario predicts slightly warmer weather, with accumulated rainfall slightly above average in May and below average in June.
