Users propose that electricity be a human right in Sonora

The Hermosillo Union of Users called on Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to address their proposal to recognize electricity service as a human right during her upcoming visit to Sonora, given the extreme weather conditions the state faces.

According to the organization’s leader, Ignacio Peinado Luna, this request seeks to have the State Government act as an intermediary with the Federal Government to promote a constitutional reform guaranteeing access to electricity as a basic service for the population.

He indicated that the group hopes Governor Alfonso Durazo will take up this proposal and present the issue directly to the President, as it is a measure that would have a national impact and would especially benefit regions with extreme climates.

Peinado Luna emphasized that access to electricity is not only essential, but in Sonora it takes on even greater importance due to the high temperatures experienced for much of the year, which force families to keep cooling equipment such as air conditioners and coolers running.

In this regard, he added that another key proposal is expanding the consumption range for the winter electricity rate, which currently has a limit of 400 kilowatt-hours every two months, to increase it to 2,400 kilowatt-hours.

“This modification would allow users to have a greater consumption margin without facing excessive charges, especially during seasons when temperatures remain high, even outside of summer,” he explained.

For this reason, he added that in recent weeks they have received numerous reports from families with electricity bills ranging from two thousand to five thousand pesos every two months, resulting from the constant use of cooling systems since March, which represents a significant burden on household budgets.

He reiterated that both proposals—elevating electricity to a constitutional right and extending the winter tariff—respond to a real need of Sonoran families, and therefore they are confident that the next presidential visit will advance the analysis.
