The installation of cameras on Mexico City police uniforms will begin with traffic officers, Mayor Clara Brugada announced.
With the goal of “guaranteeing transparent law enforcement,” Mexico City police officers will wear cameras on their uniforms, Mayor Clara Brugada announced.
On Tuesday, May 5, at a press conference, the mayor announced the implementation of this measure, which will begin with traffic police officers.
“We are going to present a program so that our Mexico City police officers will wear a camera attached to their uniform,” Brugada stated.
The announcement was made during the presentation of the new regulations for the use of Personal Electric Motor Vehicles (PEMVs).
At the event, it was announced that, due to modifications to the Mobility Law Regulations, scooters, electric bicycles, and skateboards that reach speeds greater than 25 kilometers per hour and have motors of 250 watts and up to 1.34 horsepower will now be required to have license plates. Furthermore, their riders will need a driver’s license, wear helmets, and will not be allowed in dedicated lanes or bike paths.
In this regard, the Head of Government stated that the installation of body cameras on Mexico City police officers will aim to ensure compliance with the regulations. To this end, officers will be provided with new equipment:
“This program that we are launching today will also be accompanied by new equipment for our traffic officers in Mexico City, to guarantee transparent application of the law and these regulations. This seeks to increase public trust and strengthen a culture of legality,” Brugada explained.
At this time, no details have been provided regarding when the police will begin using the cameras or who will have access to the recorded material. It was also not clarified how the recordings could be used as evidence in the event of potential crimes or offenses.
