US President Donald Trump reiterated on Friday that drug cartels “run Mexico, nobody else does,” just two days after stating that if the neighboring country doesn’t “do its job” to combat them, Washington will.

The US president mentioned, at a Mother’s Day event at the White House, his country’s control over the southern border and the cartels’ influence on fentanyl trafficking.

Regarding drug trafficking, he stated that “it comes through Mexico for the most part. We have a problem because the cartels run Mexico and nobody else, they run it.”

He emphasized that his administration has reduced drug trafficking by sea by 97%, but insisted that narcotics continue to arrive overland through Mexico.

During the week, the president declared that if other governments don’t directly combat the cartels, his administration will, and he threatened to use ground forces. “If they (Mexico) aren’t going to do the job, we will,” he said at the time.

Also this week, his Counterterrorism Strategy, which targets drug traffickers, was released. Following the case of Sinaloa’s governor on leave, Rubén Rocha, Attorney General Todd Blanc said that prosecutions against officials linked to cartels will continue.
