Teachers from Section 7 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), part of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), “liberated” three toll booths on two toll roads in Chiapas for the second consecutive day.

The “liberated” toll booths are located on the highway connecting San Cristóbal de Las Casas with Tuxtla Gutiérrez, while the other two are on the Arriaga-Ocozocoautla highway.

As on Tuesday, the purpose of the action is to publicize the objectives of the national strike and the protests that the teachers began on June 1st. The goal is to spread awareness of the movement’s objectives and to collect donations so that more teachers from Section 7 can travel to Mexico City to join the sit-in established in the nation’s capital.

The teachers of the CNTE (National Coordinator of Education Workers) are using these demonstrations to pressure Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum to meet with members of the National Unified Negotiation Commission and respond to their main demand: the repeal of the education reform and the law governing the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE).

According to the resolutions adopted Tuesday night by the state assembly, the “liberation” of the three toll booths was scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. this Wednesday.

The leader of Section 7, Isael González Vázquez, reported that the “liberation” of the toll booths, an activity taking place alongside the sit-in at the central park of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and the work stoppage, has proceeded without incident.
