Heavy rains wreak havoc in Aguascalientes: two hospitalized, homes flooded, and motorists stranded

Two people were hospitalized, homes were flooded, motorists were stranded, and fallen trees, closed roads, and sinkholes were among the damage caused by a storm that struck the city Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday, primarily affecting the eastern and western parts of the city. Damage was also reported in the neighboring municipalities of San Francisco de los Romo and Jesús María, located north of the capital.

In this city, the Municipal Civil Protection Coordination reported responding to 118 calls between 7:47 p.m. Saturday and 4:40 a.m. Sunday.

Twenty reports of flooding in the water system were addressed, requiring the closure of roads such as Gabriela Mistral Avenue, Convención Oriente Avenue, Las Viñas Avenue (one-way street), the intersection of Aguascalientes Avenue and José H. Escobedo Street, and Lomas del Cobano.

The same occurred at the intersection of Siglo XXI Avenue and Esfuerzo Nacional Avenue, Fidel Velázquez Street, as well as at the intersection of Aguascalientes Avenue and Pensadores Mexicanos Avenue (near the “Gringos Dam”).

The same measure was also implemented at the intersection of Aguascalientes Avenue and Gabriela Mistral Avenue, in front of the 14th Military Zone, and at the intersection of Aguascalientes Avenue and Federal Highway 45 North (lower level).

Vehicle traffic was also closed on Aguascalientes Avenue at its intersection with López Mateos Avenue in the Río San Pedro area. Similarly, traffic was closed at the intersection of Constitución Avenue and Siglo XXI Avenue. Continuing along Siglo XXI Avenue, traffic was also suspended at the intersections with San Gabriel Avenue and Ojocaliente III Avenue.

This same closure was repeated at the intersection of Convención Avenue and Siglo XXI Avenue in the Colonia del Trabajo neighborhood, as well as at the intersection of Escriba de Balaguer Avenue and José María Chávez Avenue. The measure was also replicated at the intersection of San Gabriel Avenue and Poliducto Street, and at the intersection of Aguascalientes Avenue and Guadalupe González Street, among other roads.

Reports of 14 flooded homes were addressed, where the water level exceeded 40 centimeters in the neighborhoods of Constitución, Pilar Blanco, La Soledad, Villa Teresa, Anexo Palomino Dena, Fraccionamiento Moderno, Trojes de Alonso, Villas de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Rodolfo Landeros, and Colinas del Río, in all four cardinal directions of the city, as well as in the community of Cañada Honda in the northeastern rural area of ​​the capital.

The force of the water also swept away five garbage containers and created three sinkholes: one on Ayuntamiento Avenue at the corner of Díaz Street in the Ojo de Agua neighborhood, another in Bordo Santa Elena, and another on Río San Pedro Avenue.

Firefighters removed four fallen trees from roadways. In addition, two power poles were downed. People were rescued from 54 vehicles stranded by the floodwaters.

In the municipality of San Francisco de los Romo, flooding was reported in the Valle de Aguascalientes Industrial Park, where two young people were rescued by state firefighters from the roof of their vehicle on the side of Federal Highway 45 North, where the water reached over 1.5 meters in height.

Meanwhile, the Civil Protection Coordination of the Municipality of Jesús María reported flooding in at least seven neighborhoods in the town center and the northern and western areas of the municipality.

Fourteen people were taken to a temporary shelter, including eight minors.

Two men were admitted to Clinic 3 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in this municipality with symptoms of hypothermia.

Assistance was provided to 16 drivers whose vehicles were stranded.

Two fallen trees were also removed from roads that were obstructing traffic.

State Civil Protection reported that 55 millimeters of rain fell in just one hour, disrupting life in this city and the aforementioned municipalities.

Civil Protection and fire department personnel from the municipalities of Jesús María and Aguascalientes continued cleanup efforts Sunday morning.
