The mayor of Villaflores, Chiapas, Valeria Rosales, is facing criticism after videos circulated showing her enjoying the Mexico vs. Czech Republic match at Estadio Azteca from a VIP section during a workday, without having reported whether she requested official leave from her duties or how the trip was financed.
The images, shared by the mayor herself and people close to her on social media, show her accompanied by her father, Mariano Rosales, former mayor of Villaflores, as well as her partner, while celebrating the Mexican National Team’s goals from one of the stadium’s most exclusive areas.
So far, the municipal government has not issued a statement clarifying whether the mayor was officially on duty on June 24, how much the trip cost, or whether the expenses were covered with personal funds.
The Cost of the Tickets Exceeds the Mayor’s Monthly Salary
According to the published prices for VIP seating during the World Cup, each ticket costs approximately 80,000 pesos. Based on that estimate, the three tickets used by the mayor, her father, and her partner would amount to approximately 240,000 pesos, not including airfare, accommodations, meals, transportation, and other travel-related expenses.
According to information available on Mexico’s National Transparency Platform, Valeria Rosales earns an approximate monthly salary of 70,000 pesos, an amount lower than the cost of a single ticket in the VIP section where she was seen.

Questions Grow Over Alleged Excessive Spending
The mayor’s presence at the sporting event sparked criticism among residents of Villaflores and social media users, who questioned why the trip took place on a business day and demanded an explanation regarding the source of the funds used.
The criticism has also extended to Mariano Rosales, who served as mayor of Villaflores from 2018 to 2024 before being succeeded by his daughter, a situation that has fueled concerns about the continuity of political power within the same family.
