The Ministry of Economy announced that an automaker will unveil an investment of over $500 million in Mexico in the coming days. The name has not yet been officially revealed, but within the automotive industry, GAC is increasingly being mentioned as the leading candidate. And this is no coincidence.
GAC has already confirmed that it will launch its first assembly plant in Mexico during the second half of 2026. This factory would have the capacity to produce combustion engine, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles on the same line.
So far, there is no official confirmation that the investment announced by the government corresponds to GAC. However, the coincidence in dates, amount, and expansion plans has raised red flags. If confirmed, this would be a historic development for the Mexican automotive industry.
Although the Chinese company JAC Motors has been present in Mexico since 2017, it does not operate independently. It does so in partnership with Giant Motors Latinoamérica, a Mexican company linked to Carlos Slim. This means that JAC does not have a fully Chinese operation in the country. In contrast, GAC Motor would be the first automaker to establish a 100% Chinese-controlled operation in Mexico.
