A total of 20 hectares of the Sierra de San Juan Biosphere Reserve, located in Tepic and home to the jaguar, will be restored in 2026, the state government announced.
The reforestation campaign in the Sierra de San Juan State Biosphere Reserve has been carried out in coordination with WWF Mexico (World Wildlife Fund).
Governor Miguel Angel Navarro Quintero issued instructions to recover this area affected by forest fires and thus protect one of the state’s most important ecosystems.
The campaign began in the Los Fresnos ejido (communal land) with the participation of authorities, ejido members, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and volunteers.
It is anticipated that during this season, 20 hectares will be restored through the planting of 16,000 native trees, including pines, holm oaks, and oaks, to contribute to the recovery of forest cover and conserve the habitat of the jaguar, as well as other wildlife species.
Sustentable coordinates the land preparation, technical assistance, and reforestation efforts, while WWF Mexico provides the plants, equipment, and logistical support for this environmental strategy.
Finally, it was detailed that the activities will continue for the next eight weekends with the goal of strengthening the ecosystems of the Sierra de San Juan, increasing the resilience of the forests, and promoting community participation in the conservation of Nayarit’s natural heritage.
