Arlin Angélica and Miguel Ángel Sánchez López left Culiacán for Mazatlán to celebrate her birthday. The trip, intended as a time for the siblings to spend together, ended in a search lasting over 40 days and, ultimately, the confirmation that both had been found dead.
Arlin was 35 years old, and Miguel Ángel was 37. They were last seen in the early hours of June 2 in Mazatlán, where they had traveled to celebrate. After losing contact with them, their relatives began circulating their photographs and official missing-person notices, hoping for news that would lead to finding them.
For weeks, their names belonged to more than just their family. Arlin and Miguel became two more faces appearing in posts, messages, and pleas for help, while those who knew them waited for their return home.
Their bodies had actually been found more than a month earlier in a rural area between Villa Unión and Escamillas, south of Mazatlán. However, forensic analysis and genetic testing were required to confirm their identities and notify their families.
The confirmation ended the uncertainty but ushered in a time of mourning. This weekend, family and friends bade farewell to the siblings in Culiacán and later gathered at the Infonavit Solidaridad sports fields, where both had begun their journey in soccer.
Teammates from Club Lobos took part in the tribute. There, Arlin and Miguel were remembered for who they were before becoming the subjects of missing-person notices: two siblings, athletes, and members of a community that knew them both on and off the field.
Those who knew them described them as wholesome people who had simply gone out to celebrate a birthday. Their farewell was marked by the presence of family, friends, and players who had shared a part of their lives with them. To date, the State Attorney General’s Office has not publicly disclosed the circumstances of their deaths, the precise location where they were found, or whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the case. The “Protocolo Alba” alert for Arlin was deactivated after her body was located.
The Sánchez López siblings’ trip was supposed to end with their return to Culiacán following a celebration. Instead, their family had to search for them for weeks and bid them farewell on the very sports courts where they had once watched them play.
